Wood Fired Vase with Orange Flashing Slip and Teal Glaze
Wood Fired Vase with Orange Flashing Slip and Teal Glaze
This vibrant orange and teal green wood fired vase has a nicely sized opening that can handle a few flower stems or a small bouquet. Many florals would pop against the rich and vibrant orange and blush peach colors around the shoulder, belly and foot of this piece. The glossy teal glaze over the lip and neck contrasts beautifully with the vibrant bare clay surface.
DIMENSIONS:
This vase stands 7 inches tall, measures 3 1/4" across the lip, and it's about 4" wide at the shoulder.
The vase was thrown using a white stoneware clay. A thin layer of flashing slip was painted around the pot, from the foot up around the shoulder. The end of a brush handle was used to press a few faint swirl marks in through the flashing slip. This piece was glazed with a teal glaze in the interior, over the lip and down the neck. The outside of the vase was left bare, so that the atmosphere of the wood fire in the kiln could add its own exciting marks and color directly onto the clay. Wood firing produces a rich and varying finish on bare clay, every wood fired piece is truly unique.
Wood firing pottery is a traditional method where pottery is fired in a kiln fueled solely by wood, resulting in unique colors, textures, and patterns due to the interaction of flame and ash with the clay surfaces. The process infuses every piece with both the warmth of the fire and the community effort involved in firing the wood kiln.
This piece was wood fired at the Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix, AZ.
