Wood Fired Swirl Vase with Brown Iron Oxide Slip and Purple Interior
This striking Wood-Fired Swirl Vase makes the perfect centerpiece! Its size is just right—big, but not too big—with a moderately sized opening. Fill it with flowers, feathers, or anything you’d like to display. The rich, earthy tones created by the wood-fired atmosphere provide a beautiful backdrop for a variety of colors.
This vase stands 9" (inches) tall, is approximately 5.5" wide at its widest point, and has a lip that measures nearly 4" across. All of my pottery is microwave- and dishwasher-safe for your convenience.
Crafted from Laguna B-Mix clay, a smooth white stoneware, this vase features a unique swirling design. The deep brown stain was achieved with a thick slip (watered-down clay) mixed with iron oxide. The swirl was created by pressing through the slip into the clay with the rounded edge of a rubber rib while supporting the interior with my hand. As the pot spun, the swirl was formed in one smooth, continuous motion.
This piece was fired in a wood-fueled kiln, where the wood-fire atmosphere imparted the gorgeous orange and white color variations that highlight the vase's texture and shape. The interior is glazed in white liner, making it easy to rinse and clean.
