This piece was thrown on my pottery wheel using white BMix clay. The texture around the belly was created by applying brown iron oxide slip (a watered down brown clay) around the belly of the pot in a thick layer. Then I drug jagged brush through the wet slip as the pot was slowly spinning on the potter's wheel. I added a couple of swirl marks to this piece by pressing the rounded edge of a rib in through the wet slip, and moving the rib up as the pot was spinning.

This vase was glazed with Teal glaze on the inside, over the lip and down the neck of the vase. The outer belly of the vase was left bare, so that the atmosphere of the wood fire in the kiln could add its own exciting marks and color directly onto the bare clay surface. Wood firing produces a rich and varying finish on bare clay, every wood fired piece is truly unique.

Wood firing pottery is a traditional method where pottery is fired in a kiln fueled solely by wood, resulting in unique colors, textures, and patterns due to the interaction of flame and ash with the clay surfaces. The process infuses every piece with both the warmth of the fire and the community effort involved in firing the wood kiln.
