Wood Fired Swirl Mug with Purple Glazed Interior

$50.00

This gorgeous wood fired mug is the perfect way to brighten up your mornings. It's a great size for coffee or tea lovers, holding over 14 ounces. It has a generous hand-formed handle, and a softly textured swirl shape.  The handle and shape make this cup a pleasure to hold and use.

DIMENSIONS
The mug stands 4 3/4 inches tall, and is 3 1/4" across the lip. It holds over 14 ounces easily. All of my pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe.

This piece was wood fired at the Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix AZ.

Wood firing pottery is a traditional method where pottery is fired in a kiln fueled solely by wood, resulting in unique colors, textures, and patterns due to the interaction of flame and ash with the clay surfaces. The process infuses every piece with both the warmth of the fire and the community effort involved in firing the wood kiln.

The mug we made with white cone 10 B-Mix clay on my potter's wheel. A brown iron oxide slip (a blend of water and clay) was applied to the outside of the mug while it was still wet on the wheel. A ragged brush was drug through the wet slip as the cup slowly spun on the wheel. I then used a rubber rib to quickly press the swirl shape into the cup through the brown slip.

The interior and top quarter of this mug was glazed with Emily Purple glaze. The outer body of the mug was left unglazed. The atmosphere of the wood kiln applied its own color and markings onto the bare clay.
