Rutile Blue Slipped Planter with Attached Drainage Plate
Rutile Blue Slipped Planter with Attached Drainage Plate
This is a vibrant little blue planter that would work well indoors or out. It's perfect for a patio or balcony, or inside on a counter, shelf or table. It would make an excellent home for a small house plant, a succulent, or maybe some herbs. The blue slip painted around the belly is bright and cheery, it would work well with many types of decor.
This planter stands 3 inches tall, and it's about 4 3/4" wide across the lip. At the base, it's about 4" across the outer rim of the plate. It has 2 drainage holes in the bottom, about the size of a bean, which drain into the attached drip plate.
The planter was thrown on my potter's wheel using a white stoneware clay. Blue stained slip (watered down clay that has been blended smooth) was painted around the belly of the pot to add some color contrast over the white clay. A swirl mark was drawn in through the wet slip using the round end of a small rib.
This piece was glazed with goldspot glaze around the lip and top inch of the pot. Then the planter was then dipped into rutile glaze, from the bottom up to right below the rim. The rutile glaze is transparent enough to allow the blue slip to shine through, and it adds some whisps of lavender, especially where the rutile glaze overlaps with the goldspot. The interior of the planter was left unglazed. This piece was fired to cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln.
