Rods Soda Fired Textured and Swirled Vase
Rods Soda Fired Textured and Swirled Vase
This is a beautiful, moderately sized vase. It's big enough to use for a nice centerpiece, and yet small enough to liven up any small room or shelf. It has a wide neck, which makes it perfect for a medium sized bouquet.
This piece was thrown on my potters wheel using Rods Bod clay. White BMix clay was coated over the outer walls of the vase, and a jagged brush was drug through the wet slip to create texture. The swirl shape was then carved in through the wet slip using a rib, as my fingers encouraged the swirl the shape from the inside. The neck and lip of the vase were finished last.
The piece was glazed in Tenmoku glaze on the inside and the lip. The outside of the vase was left bare. A soda mix was introduced into the hot kiln as this was fired, which creates a vapor that infuses the bare clay with a natural glaze. This firing method highlights and enhances all the lovely colors and textures of the clay.
This vase stands 6 3/4" tall. It measures a bit over 4 1/2" wide at the shoulder, and 3 1/2" wide across the lip. This piece is microwave and dishwasher safe.
