Soda Fired Tenmoku Brown and Black Mug
Soda Fired Tenmoku Brown and Black Mug
This handsome Soda-Fired Mug is a fantastic choice for your everyday coffee or tea. The hand-formed handle is comfortable to hold, and the glazes on this piece reacted beautifully to the soda ash introduced into the firing atmosphere. The rich brown and black tones of the Tenmoku glaze perfectly highlight the swirl design, creating a striking and unique effect.
This mug stands 4 3/4" tall and measures 3 1/4" wide at the lip. It holds about 10 oz, making it ideal for those who prefer a satisfying hot cup without being oversized.
The interior and lip of the mug are glazed in Goldspot glaze, while the exterior features a deep, glossy Tenmoku glaze. This mug was soda fired to cone 10 in a gas-fueled kiln at Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix, AZ.
All of my pottery is microwave- and dishwasher-safe for your convenience.
I created this mug on my pottery wheel using Rods Bod clay. The swirl design was crafted by pressing the rounded end of a rubber rib against the outside wall of the pot while supporting and lightly pressing from the inside with my fingers. As the wheel spun, I moved the rib and my hand upward in one smooth motion to form the swirl. The handle was pulled and shaped by hand for a perfect fit.
*Soda firing is a ceramic firing technique in which soda ash (sodium carbonate) or sodium bicarbonate is introduced into a kiln at high temperatures. The soda vaporizes and reacts with the silica in the clay and glazes, creating a distinctive, and often unpredictable surface effects.
